PANDEMIC FLU: Influenza A (H1N1) Virus

INTRODUCTION
What is the new influenza A (H1N1) virus that has been causing recent outbreaks globally?

The recent outbreaks of disease in people globally are caused by a new influenza (or “flu”) type A (H1N1) virus. There is a human H5N1 virus circulating and causing seasonal influenza and in the past, very occasionally, H1N1 viruses from swine have infected humans. The specific type of the H1N1 virus causing illness now is new or “novel” and in the current outbreak it is clear that this virus is able to infect humans and be passed from person to person. Although part of the virus may have originated from pigs, there is no evidence that the current spread of infection is coming from that source.

How does the influenza A (H1N1) virus spread?
Spread of this new virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

What should I do to keep from getting infected by the influenza A (H1N1) virus?
First and most important: wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Try not touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus and avoid close contact with people who are sick.

What is a ‘pandemic’?
Influenza pandemics happen when a new human flu virus emerges and spreads rapidly across the globe because humans have no previous immunity against this virus.

Are we at risk of a pandemic?
No one can say whether or not the current situation would evolve into a severe pandemic. But whether it turns out to be a
3 Preventing and diagnosing influenza
catastrophic health event or little more than a bad flu season, it is important to be prepared for the worst.

What can you do?
Prepare yourself and your family immediately for a possible pandemic. This includes gathering and storing emergency supplies and adopting habits that will reduce the chance of you or your family getting infected and spreading it to others (for example, washing hands regularly, covering nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, and not spitting in public).

What is the UN doing?
UN organizations are working to educate and inform staff about the threat of a pandemic and how best to prepare for it. Departments and offices have prepared business continuity plans and decided which functions are to be considered “critical” during a pandemic. Non-critical functions may be suspended for a period. In the event of a severe pandemic, most staff will be requested to remain at home and follow the UN’s Medical Guidelines. Please also see the UN pandemic influenza website: www.un.org/staff/pandemic.

ARE YOU AT RISK ?

Seasonal influenza
Everyone is at risk of getting seasonal influenza. It passes easily from person to person through droplets expelled from the nose and mouth of an infected person. These droplets can pass directly into the nose, mouth or eyes of a person who is nearby
5 Preventing and diagnosing influenza (less than 1 meter, or 3 feet, away) or indirectly when a person touches surfaces that droplets have fallen onto and then touches his or her nose, mouth or eyes before washing hands. Crowded, indoor environments may promote the chances of such transmission, which may explain the increase in respiratory infections during the winter months.
Seasonal influenza can lead to complications and even death. Most complications occur in people aged 65 years and over or in people with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart or lung disease and diabetes. Pregnant women, infants and very young children are also at increased risk of complications from influenza.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year 3 million to 5 million people have severe cases of seasonal influenza worldwide, and 250,000 to 500,000 people die.

Pandemic Influenza
When a pandemic occurs, everyone will be at risk, not just frail or elderly people. Pandemic influenza passes from person to person just as easily and quickly as seasonal flu. But, unlike with seasonal flu, people will not be immune to this new virus, so more people will become infected. In addition, it is possible that even young and healthy people who do not normally suffer complications from seasonal flu may develop serious complications and even die in a pandemic.
It is important to know, however, that the majority of people who will develop a flu-like illness in a pandemic will recover and develop immunity to the new human virus.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT HUMAN INFL UENZA VIRUSES ?

Things you should know about human influenza viruses:
• They spread through infected droplets from breathing passages.
• Droplets are expelled by talking, spitting, coughing, sneezing.
• The droplets spread about 1 meter (3 feet) from the infected person, either directly to other people or indirectly through hands and other surfaces.
• The viruses can live for several hours on hard surfaces, or on cloth and paper.
• If healthy people touch infected hands, doorknobs, keyboards, telephones, etc., they can infect themselves by touching mouths, noses or eyes.
• Sometimes the viruses can spread through the air.
• An infected person is most likely to spread the virus when he or she has fever and a cough.
• It is possible that an infected person will spread the virus a day before showing signs of illness. 3

A Teacher's Creed

I believe I have been called by God to teach.
I believe in children...young and old...black and white...rich and poor....each in need of learning.
I believe in blackboards, chalk dust, textbooks, and computers for each has a part in imparting knowledge.
I believe the love I give to my students will someday be reflected in their lives.
I believe the gift of teaching is not measured simply by marks, enrollment, or the end of the school year.
It is in the witness I give and the fullness of the life lived by those I teach.
I believe I have the power to lead those in need of learning to the threshold of their own minds.
I believe in my giftedness to use each of the tools available no matter how new or old..for the light of knowledge in the eyes of another is my goal.
I believe teaching is more than tests, diplomas, paperwork, and fundraising.
It is the values I breathe daily into another...slowly.
It is in the faith I share in Jesus...ever changing and growing...never ending.
I believe my success today goes unnoticed...until those I teach and touch can stand alone and say "in my life I have learned..."
I believe if I have taught and touched one person...in God's name...I have used my gift to me justly..and can humbly say...
I believe in teaching....
I AM A TEACHER!!

Is it possible for us to live both worlds?

Our world is in the brink of old age. It is balding and shrinking. The far and wide expanse of once lush horizon is getting ever gray. The earth recedes more and more into the faint shadow of youth and vibrant life.

The dynamic equilibrium of the nature is pushed beyond the extreme lines, the full weight of the world transgressions will swing back mightily. If we recall our country suffered different disasters like volcanic eruptions, flash flood which destroy like and properties that no one was strong enough to turn them back.

But there is more chilling disaster stalking our children, our family and the very existence of life forms. They call it PROGRESS.

Today we suffer a lot of problems like forest demulation, floods, climate change, radiation fallouts, low agricultural outputs, red tides, siltations, wild life extinction, death of marine ecosystem and thermal inversion.

The Brave new world comes. They want a change of all kinds, economic, technological, political, and cultural. In some aspects changes is not only spiraling but exploding.

In this fast pace world many welcome change, not resist change. They have the capability to shape their own lives and fashion their own destinies because they learned the value of making change, break for them rather than against them. As a result, they have developed unique strategies and skills that enable them to create opportunities from challenges.

But is it possible for us to enjoy life inspite of the industrial technological benefits of the highest, and still provide us fresh air. Can we indeed, have the best of both world?

The numerous ecological problems in the country, like pollution is not big problem for us. The soundness of the environment is largely due to discipline. The cooperation to environmental programs of the government, citizens makes an individual effort to save the environment. For we Filipinos who thought like these, who cared enough for the environment to instill in themselves the discipline for a Clean and Green Philippines. For no amount of wondering and wishful thinking will save the environment from destruction, but you must wake up and work for it.

A Plea of Youth for Peace

Peace! I want peace! We all want Peace! But there is no real peace. There has always been conflict. What action can we take in the name of peace? Can rich Filipinos share their wealth and make a special effort to help the poor catch up their developments? Can both sides change the politics of anger and resentment into a policy of cooperation?

Peace and goodwill! Brotherhood and unity! These are expressions of hope and faith, of mutual love and trust that should erase discrimination, prejudice and misunderstanding which set brothers countrymen and nation against each other; yet, these are expressions of a dream that continues to elude mankind. Will world peace remain just a thought, hidden and left forgotten?

Peace is much harder to define. It is something that we can only sense and scratch for. True peace is more difficult and unusual than any other achievements even for two people who live together and need each other.

For thousand of years we gave known the mighty maxim, “Thou shall not kill”. Yet we have created a science and technology which manufactures explosive and poison gases which kills millions of lives.

Many believe that the World War II set in motion is such gigantic mechanism of horror, that we, the new generations be frightened of ever war again. But that option is absolutely mistaken. It did not fear men. At present they enjoyed killing no memory of war deterred them.

What I am saying is self-evident. Every soldier and rebel shot to death is an eternal repetition of an error, so the truth must be repeated forever and even in a thousand of years.

We shouted for a change, a change and democracy to survive the tensions and stock of man’s headlong flight to peace to transform lifestyle and outlook so that eternal poverty and deprivation will be turn into a full measure of dignity.

We live in a time of revolution. Freedom promotes revolution for it is the very soul who is privileged to act upon dissatisfaction, for this is I am convinced that democracy and revolution is identical, meaning democracy is revolution. And I believe that revolution is a test of man’s claim to humanity.

It has been said that revolution may survive a political or economic error but not a moral one. The question then is, what moral we must be guard against in reshaping our society? There are errors which are particular against to ones situation or function; and there are errors which are common to all.

Of this common to all and the most conspicuous one is the error of self-satisfaction. Some of us whether military, rebels, or civilians are striving for privilege in the mistaken belief that fighting is a passport to achieve it.

Today, our society loss the human values. Bloodshedding add to this dehumanizing loss. By this task of every Filipino us to regain the human values by internalizing the supreme maxim; Thou shall not kill by implementing the true meaning of democracy.

The love of peace must come from a knowledge which may be seen and formulated in a thousand different ways. But it must always embody one truth. The godliness that each one bear within. It is supreme knowledge that will open our hearts which miracles begin. By then peace will arise, enemy becomes a brother; Death becomes birth, disgrace becomes honor and calamity to a good fortune.

In the Philippines today, there are millions of youths like me, eager and dynamic to find their place in the society. The time is near when upon our shoulders will be thrown the mantle of leadership. Give us wise counsel and guidance to make us ideal Filipinos, loyal, peace minded, intelligent and courageous.

Chosen future: God’s intent

Have you ever wondered of what’s your goal in life? What to do? In the world where a lot of temptations, doubts, and confusions come, we struggle to achieve what’s best.

People increasingly seek preferable lives which sometimes compromise our own virtues as Filipinos. We choose to development in exchange of nature and culture. Every move we make today is bound to be a consequence for tomorrow. The tears and blood we shed bring hope as we move further to our journey. “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed on us”, (Roman 8:8).

Let us bear in mind the Word of the Lord in getting our aim in life. Remember, we are the one shaping our future for own and everybody’s benefit. God always intends everything for the betterment of our lives, today and for the future.

BLACK TEA AND HONEY

The clock hand has struck eleven

Have to hurry and get ready,

I'm out of time.

Within this hot black tea…

I can only think

about you.

You're such a chocoholic...

That I’m sure if I licked you,

you'd taste like chocolate.

Left too long in the afternoon sun.

A courtship dance with a Civet.

burning musk incense for you.

A bee killed itself stinging

the window pane.

thankfully you didn't see it yourself.

When you don't sleep enough,

there are three drops of

honey in your eyes.

Your voice on the other side of the door...

Like a sugar pastry

In sweet black tea, it melted

Me.

RESEARCH PROJECT

One of the biggest obstacle that a college student must go through is making their own thesis or research projects....

Top three reasons:
1. Money
As in the number one reason... why??? Obviously, research projects requires a great need of money... (hahaha... can make me poor for sure...joke)
2. Topic
Why??? Simply, because there could be lot of topic to be consider in making research but there are only chosen topic that can gain interest...
3. Time
Time is very essential in making a research... But then, as we all know... in college, life is as busy as hell... And finding time to make research is very difficult, especially, if you have lot of subjects to attend and think to... waah... (can make you crazy as hell...)

But no matter how hard or difficult making research is, it is not a reason to give up... so cheers... you can do it...
